The Gingrich Foundation is pleased to recognize Hopecam as its September Charity of the Month, in honor of its extraordinary work to improve the quality of life of children undergoing treatment for cancer.
Hopecam was founded in 2003 by Len Forkas, based on his experience as the father of a child diagnosed with Leukemia in the third grade. Len noticed that the illness required his son, Matt, to leave his friends at school at precisely the time he needed their support the most. Len observed that the social isolation that comes with being treated for cancer can be one of the most difficult aspects for children, compounding an already difficult situation.
As a way of lessening this challenge, Len came up with a way to bring Matt’s friends to him virtually since Matt couldn’t visit them in person. Len installed a computer and a webcam in his son’s bedroom and another pair in Matt’s classroom so he could stay in touch with his peers and teachers. The experience cheered Matt up so much that his father became convinced other kids coping with childhood cancer should have the opportunity to connect virtually with their classes, too. He founded Hopecam to offer this life-changing experience to more children.
Over the past 11 years, Hopecam has provided hundreds of young cancer patients with the technology they needed to socialize with their classmates over the Internet. Although the devices Hopecam offers have changed from desktop computers and plug-in webcams to tablets with Skype, the sense of support children get from their connection to normal life remains the same.
Hopecam has developed significant expertise working with schools, children, and parents to make this experience happen. Many teachers even use the technology to offer instruction remotely while children are unable to attend school — although Hopecam notes that the routine social interaction it facilitates between peers is by far the more important part of its mission.
Hopecam does a remarkable job using technology to improve the lives of childhood cancer patients.
