While the book signing evening Houston is now over, the children’s series that Mrs. Gingrich created is not only adorable but educational–for both children and their parents–so please read on! Please check out my interview below and the links for more information on the book series as well as Mr. and Mrs. Gingrich’s book tour schedule. Thank you Gingrichs for including Houston in your travels! We love Ellis!!
I respectfully could not attend, due to 24/7 nursing care required, for a St. Bernard who has a serious eye injury. (Wish I could have though–I’d love to meet another writer, especially since I, too, would love to write a children’s series about all of the rescue dogs who have touched my life over the years.) I asked Callista to answer a few questions to give us a little deeper insight into her motivation to both write–and to reach out to children.
Q. Can you tell me why an elephant was chosen as primary character?
A. I knew we needed a unique character to capture the attention and interest of young children. We considered many types of animals for the main character, including, bunnies, hippos, and giraffes — but in the end, I could not resist this adorable elephant. I’m blessed to work with a very talented illustrator, Susan Arciero, who has brought Ellis the Elephant to life.
Q. Also will there be more books in the series? If so what website should people monitor?
A. Yes! We expect that Ellis will be back for many more adventures and will keep fans updated at: www.EllisTheElephant.com
In my next book, Oh Say Can You See (release date: October 2015), Ellis will learn about the War of 1812 and the survival of a young nation.
Q. Age range for the series?
A. The series is marketed for ages 4 to 8—but as we like to say, it’s wonderful for ages 4 to 80. Almost everyone can learn something new from Ellis.
Mrs. Gingrich added just a little more…
“I write these books because I love America and believe America is an exceptional nation. I believe it’s more important now than ever to make sure our children understand what makes this country so special. My goal in writing these books is to highlight the wonderful achievements of our country; to arouse a love for America; and to communicate why America is indeed an exceptional nation.
Of course, it’s a real challenge to convey our history in rhymes that children between the ages of 4 and 8 can understand. I spend countless hours getting the book just right, and I am fortunate to work with a terrific team at Regnery Kids.”
Over the past few years I’ve had the opportunity to meet many children in libraries, schools, and bookstores across the country. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how much kids love learning American history with Ellis the Elephant.
