Poll Results: Pride in America

On June 17, we asked, “how proud are you to be an American?” With more than 1,200 readers responding, this poll was quite popular. Taking the clear majority of the votes, “extremely proud” came up on top, with 86.5 percent of our readers voting with this response. “Very proud” was far behind, but still came in as the second most popular choice. A full 137, or 10.7 percent, of you voted for this choice. The final three answer choices were low in numbers. “Moderately proud” had 1.3 percent of the total votes. “Only a little proud” took 0.8 percent of the total votes. Finally, “not proud at all” rounded us out with only 0.7 percent of the total votes.

Our data differs from Gallup’s recent polling numbers. While 86.5 percent of our readers stated that they were “extremely proud” to be an American, only 42 percent said the same in the Gallup poll. Additionally, 97.2 percent of our readers voted in favor of “extremely” or “very” regarding their American pride. Only 63 percent of the voters within Gallup’s poll stated the same. This number was the lowest ever measured by Gallup. We suspect recent issues of racial injustice, COVID-19, and our economy, are contributing Gallup’s historically low numbers. Nevertheless, we are glad our readers remain so unshakably patriotic.
