Remembering American Sacrifice

by Newt Gingrich The 75th anniversary of the end of World War II is a good time for each of us to pause and remember the sacrifice of the many Americans and allies who died defeating Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. It is also a good time for us to remember the lesson that appeasing evil only allows it to grow stronger. If the free world had opposed Hitler when he militarized the Rhineland in 1935, he could have been defeated easily. Had the free world cut off all sales of Iron and oil to Japan when it first invaded China, the Japanese would have had to withdraw. Again and again, when faced with barbarism, aggression, lies, and brutality the democracies flinched and hid from reality. The estimated 85 million dead in World War II is a brutal reminder that hiding from evil allows it to win. Winston Churchill described it as feeding the crocodile. He warned that once the crocodile had eaten everyone else it would turn and eat you. Sadly, he was right and those who wanted to appease and hope for the best (in their minds reasonable) were wrong. This is a good day to remember why we need a strong economy, a strong education system, and a strong national security system including defense, intelligence, homeland security, and diplomacy. Those who forget the past will likely repeat it.
