What Newt’s Reading The president has the strength to overcome COVID-19 and keep our economy growing. -Newt Trump's COVID-19 Diagnosis Won't Stop Him or His Strong Economy By Bernie Marcus Fox Business Like the economy his administration created, President Trump is strong and can recover quickly from the coronavirus. Indeed, given that new Census Bureau and Federal Reserve reports show a record increase in median earnings, a drastic fall in the poverty rate, and a reduction in income inequality, it’s clear that the fundamentals of our economy are healthy and will recover from COVID-19. Under President Trump’s leadership, the Paycheck Protection Program has issued forgivable loans to nearly 5 million businesses, saving around 50 million jobs. In contrast, Joe Biden’s willingness to reinstate lockdowns while turning a blind eye to left-wing riots across the country threatens to reverse the progress we have made. The tax increases that Biden has proposed on small businesses combined with his support for far-left energy and labor regulations will certainly cripple the US economy. Biden had a chance to spearhead an economic recovery and failed. We hope President Trump recovers from his illness and takes this case directly to American voters. Texas will again remain a Republican state, much to the disappointment of Democrats. -Newt Democratic Dreams of a Blue Texas Slipping Away By Joseph Simonson Washington Examiner Successive waves of Hispanic immigration and new transplants from California have given Democrats hope of turning Texas into a blue state. However, according to RealClearPolitics, President Trump maintains a 3.2-point lead over Joe Biden in the polls, indicating that flipping Texas is still an uphill task for Democrats. Biden’s campaign and its allies spent $5.2 million on television ads set to air this month in the Houston and Dallas markets alone, despite that a Democrat has not won Texas since 1976. In down ballot races, incumbent Republican Sen. John Cornyn leads his Democratic opponent, MJ Hegar, by 8 points according to RealClearPolitics, despite that the latter raised $13.5 million in the third quarter. These numbers still pale in comparison to the $38.1 million raised by Democrat Beto O’Rourke from wealthy donors primarily from California and New York in his failed bid to unseat Republican Sen. Ted Cruz in 2018. Even at the gubernatorial level, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott’s Democratic opponent in 2014, Wendy Davis, outraised him in several quarters only to lose by 21 points on election day. Yet, it is futile to look for feminist support for her nomination. Several contributors for left-leaning publications have already dubbed her as a handmaiden of the patriarchy and an enemy of feminism. However, by being a Catholic woman with several children and a flourishing career at the top of her profession, Barrett debunks the narrative painted by feminists over the decades. While leftists have attempted to portray Catholicism as a religion dominated by old men, Barrett does not see any contradiction between her career and her faith, nor should she. While Catholicism bars women from becoming priests, bishops or popes, strong women are well represented in the list of Catholic saints — from St. Joan of Arc, who led troops during the Middle Ages, to St. Gianna Beretta Molla, a doctor and mom. Given her view that life begins at conception, Barrett rejects the false dichotomy put forward by feminists that dictates that one must either accept liberal social views or be deemed a subject of the patriarchy. Against parents and students' wishes, the teachers’ unions keep schools closed in New York. -Newt Parents, Kids Want Schools Open but Teachers Union Keeps Fighting to Close Them By The Editorial Board New York Post Looking at pictures of students lining up to go to school, there is a hunger for in-person education. But the teachers’ unions seem determined to thwart their efforts. After delaying school re-openings multiple times, the president of the United Federation of Teachers, Mike Mulgrew, is threatening to sue if New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) does not close schools in the neighborhoods seeking spikes in COVID-19 infections. Despite recent spikes in Brooklyn, the citywide positive test rate remains at a paltry 1 percent. De Blasio has already committed to closing public schools if citywide positive rates cross 3 percent for seven days. Other rules could also close specific schools over virus concerns. The CDC has already clarified that infected children overwhelmingly get mildly sick rather than gravely ill, but this fact hasn’t convinced Mulgrew, who continues to fight to keep schools closed. Finally, parents in Staten Island are rallying to open schools fully. De Blasio should trust their judgment while ignoring the teachers’ unions. Democrats in Congress should not hold up hearings on who is funding the civil unrest that has spread across the nation. -Newt House Republicans Demand Hearings on Rioters' Funding Sources By Jeff Mordock Washington Times On Friday, Republicans on the Democratic-controlled House Judiciary Committee wrote a letter to committee chairman Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) calling for an investigation into the sources funding the racially charged civil unrest across the country. The letter alleged that the committee had spent its time on partisan investigations which did not benefit the American people and that not looking into who’s funding the riots was an “abdication of responsibility.” Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf told Fox News last week that his agency was investigating the heads of the organizations involved in the violent unrest as well as those paying for the rioters to move from city to city. Given that Nadler has called Antifa “a myth,” it is unlikely that he will cede to Republican demands to conduct an investigation. While President Trump has attributed the violence in American cities to Antifa and other far-left movements, House Democrats have highlighted peaceful protests against police brutality while downplaying the violent rioting. Republicans on the Judiciary Committee argued that not looking into who was footing the bill for the riots would continue to harm public order in American communities.
