Biden plans to unveil an immigration plan that provides an eight-year path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million people in the country illegally. While it provides the fastest path to citizenship for this population, it does not include the traditional trade-off of additional border security measures that are usually used to solicit Republican votes. As per reports from the administration, the proposed legislation will provide for a five-year path to temporary legal status or a green card for people illegally in the country as of this year as long as they pass background checks and pay taxes. Others, including persons who immigrated illegally as children and farmers with temporary protected status, will be granted an expedited path to citizenship. Biden also plans to use his executive authority to reverse President Trump’s ban on immigration from several Muslim-majority nations.
