As a teacher, and parent herself, this school year has been anything but normal for Jackie Spinner. In her home city of Chicago, the Chicago Teachers Union and city officials have been at odds for months over the argument to reopen schools. Although Chicago Public Schools have developed a reopen plan including health screenings, strict mask orders, and social distancing requirements for students and teachers, the union members voted to reject in-person instruction.
Like Mrs. Spinner, parents across the country have seen the impact closed schools have had on themselves and their children. While many parents are trying to work from home, they are also being tasked to be their child’s teacher (and many have no training in education). Not only are children not getting the education they deserve, causing many students to fall behind, but they are lacking social interaction, stunting already low communication skills.
Although the CDC has reported, “there is little evidence of widespread coronavirus transmission in schools when proper precautions are followed,” many educators still do not feel comfortable returning to in-person teaching. One thing is certain though, students are not getting the same level of education from remote classrooms.
