By Claire Christensen President Joe Biden’s administration has been celebrated by the left, globalists, and the media as a much-needed return to multilateralism. Less than a week into his administration, we are already seeing the consequences of these policies for Americans – and where the Biden administration’s priorities lie. For example, President Biden has reportedly offered billions of dollars to foreign countries for “development” as the US is still grappling with the economic fallout of the pandemic. Many Americans have still not received their stimulus checks, more than 100,000 small business have closed, and more than 4 million people have been unemployed for more than six months. Simultaneously, President Biden has also rejoined the Paris Climate Agreement to combat climate change. But, the agreement will destroy the US coal industry, cost the US economy $3 trillion, and will eliminate 6.5 million industrial sector jobs. President Biden reversed President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the World Health Organization to the delight of the global establishment– despite the WHO’s blatant ineffectiveness in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic. This means even more money out the door and away from American pockets. Clearly, as President Biden pursues popularity abroad with his old friends, he has already lost sight of hardworking Americans. But he isn’t the only world leader vying for a seat at the “cool kids’” table. This week, at the World Economic Forum, General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Xi Jinping gave a speech appealing to the global community. He said, “Let us all join hands and let multilateralism light our way toward a community with a shared future for mankind.” (For context, “community with a shared future for mankind” is Party speak for a CCP-led world order.) Xi Jinping promised that “China will continue to take an active part in international cooperation on COVID-19.” He hailed the World Health Organization for building a “global community of health for all” and echoed the necessity of the Paris Agreement. Xi alleged China’s championing of international law, claiming, “We should stay committed to international law and international rules instead of seeking one’s own supremacy.” He called for abandoning “ideological prejudice” between different countries, saying, “The best criteria are whether a country’s history, culture and social system fit its particular situation, enjoy people’s support, serve to deliver political stability, social progress and better lives, and contribute to human progress.” Xi’s speech sounds like a benign invitation, but let’s look at the facts. First and foremost, the genocide that is taking place in Xinjiang against the Uyghurs cannot be explained away as “ideological differences” between the Chinese Communist Party and other countries. There is no justification for forced imprisonment, slave labor, and forced abortions. The fact that Xi Jinping was invited to give a speech to some of the most powerful figures in the world and offered a lecture on “ideological prejudice” is absurd. Second, Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party have no regard for international law – unless it behooves their own interests. Consider that in 2016, an international tribunal ruled that China’s claims to the South China Sea had no legal basis. Yet China still builds and militarizes artificial islands and provokes its neighbors in the region. Moreover, at no point during the COVID-19 pandemic has China been a trustworthy partner. The Chinese Communist Party lied about the outbreak, covered it up, refused to share information, and has attempted to exploit the crisis for economic and geopolitical gain. The Chinese Communist Party’s response to the COVID-19 outbreak has been a blatant demonstration of self-preservation and personal deniability, most recently evidenced by the CCP’s calls to the WHO to investigate US military facilities as the source of the initial outbreak. Communist China calls for the US to be investigated as the WHO team has launched an “investigation” into the origins of the coronavirus in China. However, this query is a total waste of time since the investigation will not be conducted independently, nor look into the whether the virus initially escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Instead, the investigation will simply build off of reports from Chinese scientists. Finally, we must be clear-eyed about communist China’s leverage over international organizations. The WHO is one example, but also consider the United Nations, where CCP-backed candidates, according to the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, have won almost all major elections for the past several years. To hit the point home: Xi Jinping’s wife, Peng Liyuan, is a special envoy to the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and is also a Goodwill Ambassador to the WHO. As a candidate, President Biden said, “China is going to eat our lunch? Come on man.” The reality is, China will sit down at the cool kids’ table and eat our lunch if given a platform and the opportunity to continue to weaponize its influence at international forums and organizations. Or, if in the name of multilateralism, President Biden frolics away all of American’s lunch and livelihood, it won’t really matter what China ate. America will be hungry and weak. But at least we’ll still be at the cool kids’ table… right? Newt hosts monthly virtual events in which he discusses news of the day and why it matters to you and your community.
