Governor Cuomo Turns on Biden

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is already begging President Joe Biden for money. Cuomo has even threatened to sue if Biden does not give him what he thinks New York is owed: $15 billion in Covid-19 aid. This money, according to Cuomo, is essential to balance New York’s budget.

Gov. Cuomo has gone so far as to say that “the COVID assault on New York state in the spring was due to federal negligence,” as opposed to his mishandling of nursing homes. If New York does not receive $15 billion in the next stimulus package, New York will lose funding for schools, Medicaid, and social services. In response, New York would legalize marijuana and mobile sports betting, as well as raise income taxes from 8.82 percent to 10.8 percent.

New Yorkers should expect this raise in taxes, as Biden’s current stimulus plan, “American Rescue,” only has $6 billion marked for New York. However, Cuomo’s threat to sue the federal government if New York does not receive more federal aid is undercut by Cuomo’s own budget plan. His budget accounted for “billions of dollars in federal coronavirus aid… approved last year, allowing overall funding for education to increase by $2.1 billion or 7.1 percent — without the additional $15 billion he’s demanding.” Cuomo’s budget is not adding up, and he is going to sue the federal government to try to straighten it out.
