The coronavirus situation in India has undergone a massive shift since the fall to the confusion of many. Despite housing the second largest population in the world, the country has gone from reporting more than 100,000 COVID-19 cases a day to just over 8,000 on Tuesday. The reason behind the sudden decrease? Scientists believe it is because many in India have already been infected making it more difficult for the virus to spread.
A recent survey showed that roughly 270 million people have already been infected since January alone, especially in larger cities such as Delhi and Mumbai. While officials admit that the number who have contracted the virus is likely higher than their estimation, positive test rates for the virus are now below two percent, and there are fewer daily tests in general. India’s lower death rate from the virus compared to countries like the United States is also interesting to experts. It is believed that the country’s younger population count and unknown immunities are the reason behind this.
With new COVID-19 strains making their way around the world, it remains to be seen how India will be affected. They have distributed more than 4 million vaccines and hospitals are no longer at capacity as they were just months earlier. It will be interesting to watch how India compares to other nations as vaccines rollout and experts continue to study the virus and its lasting effects.
