For most Americans China is seen as one of the greatest national security risks in recent years. Yet, in the wake of the new Biden administration, the president has quietly dismissed a proposed rule to require US universities and K-12 schools to disclose any financial ties to Chinese state-run Confucius Institutes.
Former Education Secretary Betsy Devos warned that these classrooms were being targeted by the Chinese Communist Party. Devos also released a report showing how universities failed to disclose more than $6.5 billion in foreign funding. Combined with a 109-page report from the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, it is easy to see foreign countries seek to exploit America’s openness to access US research labs and academic institutions.
President Biden has promised to be tough on the Chinese Communist Party. The first step is to ensure there are no foreign powers influencing our education system.
