Why New York’s Rise in Gun Violence Won’t Stop Any Time Soon

A Flash Brief from the Gingrich 360 Team:

The state of New York has received much criticism over its handling of the coronavirus pandemic and the restrictions it has put in place. The virus is not the only problem plaguing the state, however, thanks to a sudden rise in gun violence since 2019.

The cause of this violence is likely due to a bail reform law that eliminated cash bail, according to NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea. Gun possession and other crimes became more prevalent as many who were initially charged were never imprisoned or penalized. There is data to support this as well, with only 450 out 3,793 people arrested on gun charges last year still in jail.

Commissioner Shea feels that the upward trend of homicides and arrests will continue until the bail reform is reversed. It is bad enough that citizens of New York must worry about COVID-19. Lawmakers should work to ensure that gun violence is not an added anxiety.
