One could be forgiven for mistakenly believing that the Biden administration acted to cancel the Keystone XL pipeline out of genuine convictions about the state of the environment. However, new reporting confirms that Biden’s climate policies are nothing more than political theater.
According to the Washington Examiner, the administration recently brokered a meeting between the Taliban and the Turkmenistan government to discuss a TAPI, a new trans-Afghanistan natural gas pipeline named for the four nations it would cross Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.
“We are trying to contribute to prosperity of our people and development of our country by providing protection to all projects,” the Taliban leader Suhail Shaheen said in a statement. Part of the proposed deal would provide the Taliban with tens of millions of dollars per month to ensure the security of the pipeline.
While the Taliban is an oppressive terrorist group and longtime enemy of the United States, Turkmenistan doesn’t fair much better. The nation’s government is ranked among the most cruel and repressive regimes on earth, beating even North Korea for lowest measures of freedom and civil liberty, the Washington Examiner reports. A deal between the two would be a dangerous on its own, let alone with the inclusion of large profits.
Biden is making a big mistake by enabling the enrichment of two dangerous regimes. While the Midwest suffers from the fallout of a scrapped pipeline, our Democratic government is working to see our adversaries prosper. Republicans should recognize this supposed climate policy for what it is—a political power grab.
