Following former President Donald Trump’s acquittal last week, various polls were conducted to collect the thoughts of the American people. One poll from Quinnipiac University with a total of 1,056 Americans participating showed intriguing results.
Even with several Republican politicians skeptical of Trump’s place in the party, 87 percent of participants who identified as Republican felt he should be able to hold office again. However, 68 percent in general felt the president did not do enough to combat the US Capitol riot in January.
Another poll from Politico/Morning Consult also showed roughly 60 percent of Republicans hope for Trump to be a part of the GOP following the trial. Around eight out of ten still had a “favorable opinion” of him after the acquittal, proving Trump’s popularity has not disappeared.
While Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) emphasized the wish “to have nominees representing the Republican Party who can win in November,” it is unclear whether the Trump family will be included in this plan. These polls show that Trump’s role is far from finished, and only time will tell how Americans will vote after President Joe Biden’s term.
