Ignoring China’s Warning, McCarthy Plans Meeting with Taiwan’s President

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s office has scheduled a meeting with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley on Wednesday, along with a group of congressional members.

Despite warnings from the Chinese government not to meet with Ing-wen, McCarthy insisted that his schedule was not dictated by China.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry reiterated its opposition to official U.S.-Taiwan interactions, with spokesperson Mao Ning restating the warning on Monday. China’s embassy charge d’affaires, Xu Xueyuan, warned that McCarthy’s meeting with Taiwan’s president could lead to a serious confrontation in the U.S.-China relationship. China had also opposed a previous trip by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to meet with Taiwan’s president in August.
