Equity. It’s a word that has become synonymous with “true social justice.” President Joe Biden recently signed an Executive Order on Advancing Racial Equity, which is intended to address racial inequality entrenched in laws and public policies.
But, according to Shelby Steele — a longstanding conservative commentator on race in America and a senior fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution – equity is a strategy used to leverage power and use implied accusations of bigotry as a cudgel. Steele suggests that equity was a new, cleaner, emptier term to organize around. Allowing whites to prove themselves “innocent” of racism. To Steele, the tribalism of race such as concepts like systemic racism and white privilege have collided with the reality of freedom.
