This past year has proven difficult for all Americans for a number of reasons, and unfortunately, it also held the largest murder percentage increase ever in the United States. Despite the presence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the murder rate rose to alarming rates, with many being Black victims in drive-by shootings.
The start of the violence can be tracked back to May following riots and protests over the tragic death of George Floyd. The rallying cries during this time of defunding or abolishing the police, along with national unrest, led to fewer available police. Officers that normally responded to reports of violence in Black communities felt they might lose their jobs due to the public perception about them should they intercede.
The data backs up these ideas as well. Roughly 2,000 more Americans were killed in 2020 than in 2019, several were children. Louisville and Seattle were among the cities that saw the largest percentage murder increase. Milwaukee saw a shocking 95 percent increase, topping all cities according to crime analyst Jeff Asher.
Crime and murder rates were at a low prior to the pandemic, but this past year has completely changed that. Many still call for the police to be defunded despite the violence continuing around the United States. Something must change soon to stop the needless bloodshed, but it remains to be seen if Joe Biden has a plan to combat this crime.
