The rollout of COVID-19 vaccines has steadily increased over the past few months, but some are still skeptical about vaccine effectiveness. A recent study from the United Kingdom, however, could prove skeptics wrong thanks to its positive showings.
Overall, hospitalization and death rates lowered with just the first dose of the vaccine in many cases, especially in elderly people. In fact, the effectiveness of just the first vaccine shot in preventing infection has led the U.K. to prioritize more people to get it while extending the period between the first and second shots.
There are still many uncertainties, but the data has prompted the UK to schedule school re–openings and the removal of social distancing restrictions later in the year. New strains of the virus that are emerging could possibly require second- and third-generation shots as well. The British government’s remarkably quick rollout of vaccines coupled with the results of this study provide hope that normalcy can return soon.
