The newly appointed chief of Moscow’s space agency announced that Russia will quit the International Space Station (ISS) “after 2024.” This news follows Moscow’s military intervention in Ukraine and numerous rounds of unprecedented sanctions against Russia.
The relationship between Russia and the United States on the ISS has been ongoing since 1998. Space exploration is one of a few areas in which teamwork between Russia and the United States and its allies has not been broken by tensions over Ukraine – until now.
Meanwhile, the Russian space agency reportedly continues to suffer a series of setbacks, including corruption scandals and the loss of several satellites and other spacecraft.
